I read about a conversation a woodworker had with a neurosurgeon concerning how long it takes to master a discipline. The surgeon said "ten years and ten thousand hours." The idea was that it takes that much effort to become a skilled woodworker. Keep at it!

Steve I like your tips on building a pinewood derby car. I plan on using them on my son's car. I've never used anything like this with my oldest son (now 16). Just built it to what he liked. He didn't care about coming in first. But know after doing this for many years my 7 year old is into winning and wants to win. So this will help me very much. Thank you for sharing your tips.

Great site. I've been a furniture maker for a number of years, specializing in the Arts and Crafts style as well as some contemporary studio furniture. It's always nice to see another woodworker in training and learning the ropes. Don't worry about making mistakes, that's the best way to learn, provided you're making them on wood and not your fingers! I consider myself pretty good at what I do, but I still blow it from time to time. Good luck!!

Great info. We just won at Pack. Moving on to District. I noticed our car was slowing down while the 3rd place car was getting faster on runs. The 3rd place car has won our Pack race 2 yrs. in a row. Not this year! Spoke to his Dad, apparently "TUBE O LUBE" is what I need to be using.

I just wanted to complement you on your website. I am a member of the woodnet.net forum also and saw one of your posts and followed the link. Your site is well laid out and clear and to the point. I guess I would call myself a beginner wood worker. I have been doing construction type work but just started getting into furniture making other than the occasional shelf and such. Anyways.
